Literature Text

From my earliest hour you have been
as a dancer upon a mirrored lake;
Your perfection hidden, I hadn't seen
one as grand as you, who could my heart take.
Though treach'rous Fate conspired against us,
I vowed to hold the course for only you.
Neither the darkest depths or deepest cuts
could ever stop me from following through
on the vow I gave you that first day;
"For however long I am called to fight,
From you I will never be kept away"
because I know you'll keep our love alight.
Even now, as these flames cut my life short,
know you'll forever be in my tin heart.
This is an entry for the 'Fairy Tale' Contest. Hopefully I'm not too late with getting it written.
This poem draws quite a bit of inspiration from the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, 'The Steadfast Tin Soldier'. I'm not quite sure why, but that has always been my favourite story of his. Perhaps it is the tragedy of the end, but something in it really calls to me, so to speak.

I love the story of the tin soldier! You did a good job conveying the sentimentality without giving too much away. Good luck on the contest!
