Literature Text
The shadows of others' expectations
weigh heavily on my path.
I stumble on stones in
the barren darkness, unable to tell
if they had always been there...
or if they had been thrown.
An echo chamber of doubts
fills the space around my head.
So many shrieks and murmurs
set the air thrumming that
I can no longer tell
which voice is mine.

sometimes pretty words are all we can hope for
and sometimes we want more.
more than what we have,
more than what we can give
we want to be more than we could ever be because
we've set expectations higher than the skyscrapers lining
new york city's horizon and
there's more of them than there are
nightlife lights in the windows of people
who can't sleep at night because
they're looking out at the cityscape and wondering
if there's even more in life to hope for.

or vague admittance of
caged mind-demons rattling against their chains or
the way middle school / high school / life
has set me ablaze or

To find the courage to smile on your darkest days,
To laugh in the face of your loneliness,
To look at yourself in the mirror past your insecurities,
To have faith that you are worth it,
To be brave enough to lift your head,
To see hope in the stars.
To find the strength to take the next step forward,
Even if the future is unknown.
Like a book you have the power to write your story.
Some chapters might be hard to get through.
They might drag you through the dirt.
But some will also show you light of the sun,
And the love in your heart.
Life is precious.
With the good times, and the bad.

the moon is beautiful
i told her that i loved her.
she gave me a necklace with a heart
in response, the pendant sat heavy in my palms
with the weight of words
i couldnt unstick from the roof of my mouth.
years later, the pendant has gone missing
somewhere in between seventeen and eighteen -
and i still think of her, shades of baby blue and lavender
take me back to soft skin cocooned in blankets,
stolen moments in her small room,
the sad bitterness of the unanswered, unuttered.
someday i hope to love like this again. i look up
at witching hour skies every once in a while and wonder
what magic brought us together for
those three years i had -
the night breeze

This poem isn't quite my usual subject matter, but it's always good to try new things, as they say.
